How do you make big life decisions with confidence?

This class is for juniors, seniors, and graduate students

who have major decisions on their horizon.

Come join a community of Jesus followers on a journey to

answer this question this spring.

Senior Seminar: Transitions

One of our top goals at TCBC is to help graduating seniors – whether they are a part of TCBC or not – to prepare well for the transition from college to post-college life. For many, this transition can be one of the hardest ones to walk through. Spiritually, it can wreak havoc on your soul when you run into unanticipated challenges and hardships. Yet, with good preparation, the steps you take after college could be full of excitement, adventure, and spiritual growth. So we want to do what we can to help you prepare well. This coming semester, we will be holding 5 Senior Seminars where you get to discuss the transition from college to post college life with adults who have walked the road ahead of you. The first session on “Transitions” will be held on Sunday, January 29th at 12:15 pm (Youth Building). Come enjoy some fellowship and free food.

How will you survive Finals? Read Below.

TCBC’s 2nd site is coordinating an outreach for students during finals week. Members of the 2nd site core team are going to be hanging out at Dollar Java (on Green Street) during that week and inviting students in for FREE FOOD and a place to take a study break. Students will enjoy the food, play games, relax by doing some art, or go to the designated study area. This will take place from 8 p.m. until midnight on Reading Day and Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of finals week. Each day there will be a different food theme.

We are asking TCBC  students to pick at least one of these days to INVITE FRIENDS and go to Dollar Java for some free food and to take a break! This is a great opportunity for you to get involved in TCBC’s ministry.

Senior Seminar Kickoff Lunch – This Sunday, Dec. 4th – Free Lunch!

It’s coming…GRADUATION! And as graduation draws near, many of you are starting to think about life after graduation in the “real world.” For many, the transition from college to life after graduation has been full of struggle, confusion, and loneliness. But for others, they thrive – emotionally, relationally, and spiritually. What makes the difference? We think that one way you can thrive is by getting ready for that transition rather than just letting it crash in on you with all of its potential confusion, struggle, and loneliness.

So at TCBC, we are offering SENIOR SEMINARS to help any graduating senior get ready for life after college. Over a free lunch, you can come and talk with some young adults and learn from their experiences; you can hear from older brothers and sisters who will offer help on areas like budget/finances, navigating changes in relationships, and what is involved in finding a good church. Note: this is open to any graduating senior who is interested in coming. You don’t have to attend TCBC. And oh…did I mention…FREE FOOD?!

Our first one – to whet your appetite will be THIS SUNDAY, DEC. 4th, at 12:30pm downstairs in the Fellowship Hall of Twin City Bible Church (806 W. Michigan Ave., Urbana, IL.).

Then next semester, we will continue with Senior Seminars on Jan 29th, Feb. 12th, Feb. 26th, March 4th, and March 11th – all at 12:30pm -1:45pm. They will all be at TCBC (either in the Fellowship Hall or the Youth Building – we’ll let you know where we will be). So mark your calendars!

To help us plan for food, please RSVP by THIS Friday, Dec.2nd by emailing me.

And please feel free to forward this email on to your friends who are graduating!

Peace,
Pastor Allen (Wakabayashi) at Twin City Bible Church
on behalf of the Real World Faith team at TCBC.

Come to the Harvest Party Sunday, October 16th after second service. The party is being held at the Dick and Janet Watkins place in Mahomet, IL. Directions will be handed out after the service. Don’t have a ride? Not a good excuse. There will be cars lined up after service waiting to whisk you away.

Adopt-a-family photo session! Shannon Anderson, locally renowned photographer, has been gracious enough to take photos of families with their adopt-a-college students. Please use this opportunity to have fun together and don’t forget to leave a tip to Shannon’s favorite ministry opportunity!

TCBC’s Approach to Campus Ministry

At TCBC, we have a pretty unique approach to campus ministry.

For one, we do campus ministry but we don’t have a college fellowship! We believe in and support our parachurch ministry partners like InterVarsity, Cru, and Navigators. So we have opted NOT to have a church based college fellowship. Instead we steer college students to get involved in one of the parachurch campus fellowships.

However, we do believe that God has called us to minister to college students. Our philosophy has been to develop ministry programs and activities that complement what the parachurch ministries are doing on campus. The parachurch does peer based ministry (students reaching out to and caring for fellow students). So at TCBC, we believe that our role is to help students have significant experiences of the wider, intergenerational Body of Christ (so meaningful connections with brothers and sisters in Christ outside of their peer networks). So, for example, we run programs like the “Adopt-a-Student” program where TCBC families “adopt” students. Or we run “Senior Seminars” where graduating seniors engage in discussions with Adults in our congregation to talk about the difficult transition from college to post-college life (“how do you live out your faith in your job?” “how do you look for and find a good local church?” etc). Therefore, we’ve have begun calling our ministry to students – “Real World Faith” and our tag line is “Connect Here, Connect Out There.” We believe that to the degree that students meaningfully connect with the local church – “Connect Here,” then to that degree they will be better prepared to “Connect Out There” in the real world of post college life.

So our Real World Faith team meets monthly – usually on the 2nd Tuesday of the month – at 5-7pm. Our next meeting will be on Sept 13th. Most likely we will be meeting in the Champions Room which is downstairs in the southwest corner of the church (if you can’t find us, just ask someone where we are). And you may want to bring a sandwich or something to munch on since we are meeting over the dinner hour.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me – either email or phone.

Take Care,
Allen Wakabayashi

Ship, invest, sow!

Good word from old King Solomon

Ship your grain across the sea;
after many days you may receive a return.
Invest in seven ventures, yes, in eight;
you do not know what disaster may come upon the land.

If clouds are full of water,
they pour rain on the earth.
Whether a tree falls to the south or to the north,
in the place where it falls, there it will lie.
 Whoever watches the wind will not plant;
whoever looks at the clouds will not reap.

As you do not know the path of the wind,
or how the body is formed[a] in a mother’s womb,
so you cannot understand the work of God,
the Maker of all things.

  Sow your seed in the morning,
and at evening let your hands not be idle,
for you do not know which will succeed,
whether this or that,
or whether both will do equally well.

Old King Solomon recognizes the uncertainty that God has built into the world and encourages people to be pro-active in light of uncertainty.  To try new things, invest in several places, to “ship, invest, and sow,” without knowing how everything will turn out.  Note Solomon’s warning about inaction.  Nothing will have a chance to grow unless some something is planted.  No harvest without sowing.
Ship, invest, sow!

Who do you want to be by the end of the semester?

Today is a good day to reflect on the semester ahead before it starts.

What kind of a person do you want to be at the end of the semester?

How much room have you given God – the maker of heaven and earth, and you! – to mess around in your life this semester?  God is bold!  Tell God you are open for an adventure of faith this semester – and then keep your eyes open.
